OH GAWSH NO. You are not doing it wrong. That site is in fact, pure awfulness for at least a hundred pages and very, very aggravating and not at all fun to read until Act 2. In fact, I would just SKIP AHEAD to Act 2 if I were you! YES, IT IS THAT BAD. I honestly don't know what the guy was thinking for the first Act, and I only endured through it because I was promised that it would get better. AND TRUST ME, IT DOES. SOOO MUCH BETTER.
As a victim of trudging through Homestuck, I know exactly how you feel, so I don't blame you at all for giving up (( I did too and refused to continue on. I WAS COAXED WITH CANDY AND SWEET SWEET PROMISES )).
New characters are introduced later on and it actually gets funny and... and... THERE ARE LIKEABLE THINGS LIKE THESE CUTE MUTANT KITTIES~
The comic plot used to be run by the viewers. Hussie would pick suggestions from the readers, which is why you get all the really random stuff at the beginning, because nothing had really been planned out. It started getting awesome when he stopped using the suggestions and began plotting it out as a proper epic. :>
